New Originals by Gulay Berryman

Music played a regular part in the entertainment found in Colonial-era taverns. Josiah Chowning operated a tavern between 1766-68 but very little is known of its exact history other than that its ownership appears to have changed hands many times during its early existence: William Shields, John Blair, James Bird, Graham Frank, Haldenby Dixon, and John Jeggitts are all names associated with the property besides that of Josiah Chowning. In the 19th century, the original tavern building was demolished and Sam Griffin opened and operated the Colonial Hotel on its expanded premises. When the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg was undertaken, Chowning’s Tavern was re-built in 1940-41.

'ART AT WESSEX HUNDRED' is a three-part ongoing art exhibition at Susan Constant Hall at The Williamsburg Winery

Sincere thanks to 'The Art People' (TAP) Cary Garnet, Kay Grady, Mary and Jim McCormick for their superb efforts in putting together a fabulous art show of vineyard scenes and events and to Patrick and Francoise Duffeler, owners of The Williamsburg Winery, for supporting this wonderful initiative! The first phase of this show, 'NEW BEGINNINGS', runs from April 1st to August 29th, 2022. I am honored to have two paintings included in this exhibition:

The Art of Law - Smith Strong, PLC

I first met Van Smith, Attorney at Law, about five years ago when he visited our Williamsburg Art Gallery back when we operated from gallery premises in Merchants Square, Williamsburg. We stayed in touch and this past week, I had the pleasure of re-connecting in person with Van when we delivered two large commission artworks for his law offices in Richmond. Let me just say the 'Wow’ factor is way up there the moment you enter his office premises! It was the first time I have ever seen a professional office which looked and had the feel of an art museum – every painting personally and tastefully selected by Van for its artistic qualities and for having a historic or geographic connection to Virginia! It was wonderful catching up on news with Van and I am truly honored to have my Williamsburg-themed pieces joining his beautiful art collection!
